Rainwater Harvesting System

Albany Water Systems is currently supplying a complete packaged rainwater harvesting and reuse system for the BLVD-Q development at 188 Queen Elizabeth Boulevard in Etobicoke, Ontario. The system is designed to collect, treat, and distribute rainwater captured from roof and green-roof areas, providing a dependable non-potable water source for landscape irrigation and other reuse applications. This project supports the development’s sustainability and LEED performance objectives by reducing reliance on municipal water.

Treatment Skid

The treatment skid performs full purification of collected rainwater prior to storage in the day tank. Ozone Oxidation System – On-site ozone generation and injection oxidize organic matter, colour, odour, and microorganisms. The process includes ORP monitoring for controlled oxidation and an ozone destruct unit for safe venting. Dual-Stage Cartridge Filtration – Two stainless-steel housings in series (20 µm primary and 5 µm secondary) remove suspended solids and fine particles, protecting the UV reactor and ensuring clear, high-quality water. UV Disinfection Unit – A high-intensity ultraviolet reactor provides final disinfection, inactivating bacteria and viruses without chemicals. UV intensity and lamp status are continuously monitored and alarmed through the control system.

Booster Skid

  • The booster skid delivers treated rainwater from the day tank to the irrigation network.
  • Vertical multistage stainless-steel booster pump with VFD for constant-pressure control
  • Expansion tank to absorb pressure surges and minimize pump cycling
  • Pressure transmitter and dry-run protection integrated into PLC logic
  • Isolation valves, gauges, and check valves pre-installed for simplified service

Controls & Integration

The central PLC/HMI control panel manages both the treatment and booster skids. It provides:

  • Automatic tank filling and pump sequencing
  • Alarm handling and event logging
  • Real-time monitoring of cistern and day tank levels, pump status, ozone/UV performance, and flow totals
  • BACnet TCP/IP connectivity for seamless integration with the building’s BAS

Summary

Once completed, the BLVD-Q rainwater system will operate fully automatically, delivering energy-efficient and low-maintenance water reuse performance while ensuring consistent irrigation supply and long-term reliability.
This project showcases Albany Water Systems’ engineering expertise in designing advanced, packaged rainwater harvesting solutions—combining ozone oxidation, dual-stage filtration, UV disinfection, and intelligent controls within compact, factory-tested skids built for modern sustainable developments.
